The San Antonio Just Transportation Alliance is leading an effort to challenge the federal certification of the San Antonio Metropolitan Planning Organization. For more information, see our Media Alert (PDF) and Slide Show Presentation in html.(to download the zipped file in PowerPoint of the Slide Show, click here).

Our first statement as an alliance was to request that the VIA Board postpone the scheduled December 17, 2002, vote on the proposed Comprehensive Service Plan. Check out coverage from the San Antonio Current (2 PDF files - Part 1 and Part 2) and the San Antonio Express-News.

If you are a resident of San Antonio or Bexar County and are concerned about the proposed changes to VIA's routes, contact us!

FORMING: an alliance of people who need and care about transit system as "world class" as our highway system, transportation choices that support communities rather than tear them apart, the little things like sidewalks that make neighborhoods friendly and vibrant places, and all of this tied together into a system that moves people and goods, not just machines.

The goal of this project is to set up a viable, self-sustaining, citizen advocate group that can take an active role in the decision-making process. This is intended to be a positive experience for everyone involved, including the government bodies that the group will be appealing to. Our goal is to get people working together for improvements and to elevate the conversation beyond confrontation.

The San Antonio Area Just Transportation Alliance (SAJTA) is recruiting citizen advocates and a steering committee. Current members represent various groups from the community, including San Antonio Independent Living Services (SAILS), Smart Growth, Texas Rural Legal Aid, San Antonio Area Disability Advocate, the Low Vision Club, and others.

Everyone is a transportation expert, it is knowing how to "achieve the changes and improvements" needed that does not come naturally for most people. We will work with you to develop the skills needed to become a change agent in your community.

Now, it is your project.

If you nurture it and help it to grow, it can be a glorious success.
